What the role involves

Are you looking for a role in a company that's solving one of the greatest challenges of our lifetime?  Ophelia helps people end their opioid use and restore their quality of life with respect for their time and dignity. Our mission is to make evidence-based treatments for opioid use disorder (OUD) accessible to everyone... and we're looking to bring more people onto our team to help us achieve it.

Ophelia is a venture-backed, healthcare startup that helps individuals with OUD by providing FDA-approved medication and clinical care through a telehealth platform. Our approach is discreet, convenient, and affordable. We've been successfully operating in 14 states for almost six years and we're excited to continue our growth. We are a team of physicians, scientists, entrepreneurs, researchers and White House advisors, backed by leading technology and healthcare investors working to re-imagine and re-build OUD treatment in America.

About The Role

As a Software Engineer I at Ophelia, you will play a key role in developing innovative, compliant solutions to support our mission of treating opioid use disorder through telehealth. You'll work across the stack with an emphasis on front-end applications using our core technologies: Typescript, React, and Firebase on GCP. Your work will have a direct impact on patients, clinicians, and our ability to scale.

In this role, you'll work collaboratively through the full product cycle—from inception to results—taking responsibility for your tasks and, with mentorship and support, driving small projects to completion in our remote environment. You’ll collaborate deeply with Product and Design peers and cross-functional teams, including clinicians and non-technical stakeholders, to ensure our products meet the needs of both users and the business. Flexibility and adaptability will be key, as the product needs and company priorities shift rapidly in this fast-evolving, growth-stage company.

Other responsibilities include continuously improving our systems through code reviews, debugging, refactoring, and system maintenance while advocating for best practices to maintain code quality and performance. Through code review and 1:1 sessions, you will be actively mentored by more senior engineers, and be coached on learning and professional development opportunities. Your role also involves staying up-to-date on emerging industry trends and technologies, including but not limited to the use of AI in our products and development processes, bringing new ideas to drive innovation in product design and development.

Together, we will help hard-to-reach individuals treat their opioid dependence. While direct experience in this treatment area is not mandatory, knowledge of the healthcare space, including understanding health outcomes, benchmarks, systems, and regulatory compliance (HIPAA) is highly beneficial.

Responsibilities

Develop across the stack , with an emphasis on increasing capabilities of front-end apps, delivering impact by supporting team needs. Our core technologies are Typescript, React, and Firebase (e.g., Firestore, Authentication, Remote Config) in Google Cloud Platform.

Take ownership of your work , with support, by driving small projects from inception to impact, while maintaining an emphasis on code quality. Proactive communication, inquisitiveness, collaboration, and relative autonomy are key in our remote environment.

Practice flexibility and adaptability in our growth-stage company. We’re learning and growing everyday, and with that, our approach and focus will evolve. We seek to adapt in the face of ambiguous, new challenges.

Collaborate cross-functionally in both sourcing new ideas and implementing improvements from our amazing community of clinicians and care team. You’ll be encouraged to ask even “dumb” questions as you work directly with our technical and non-technical teams to build the next generation of our products.

Improve quality continuously through healthy software developm

About Ophelia

Ophelia helps people quit opioids without going to rehab. We offer online doctor’s visits, withdrawal medication prescriptions, and support for long-term recovery, using a protocol 6x more effective than most rehabs (2/3rds of which don't have doctors). More than 3 million Americans are addicted to opioids, but 80% are not getting help, due to jobs, families, and privacy concerns. Meanwhile, there's a proven treatment that increases survival rates by 600%, and it's low cost, discreet, and convenient. It's called MAT, and it looks like treatment for anxiety or depression: medication plus therapy. However, doctors need a special waiver to prescribe the medication, which fewer than 5% of them have, so it's difficult to get, and most people are buying it on the street. Sadly, drug dealers aren't doctors: every 11 minutes another American dies of an opioid overdose, now the #1 cause of death for Americans under 50. Ophelia is replacing rehab with telemedicine, using proven science and a consumer-first approach. The opioid treatment market in the U.S. is $15B, and 85% of opioid addicts have insurance that pays for it. We're treating roughly 400 patients with thousands more waiting. Zack started Ophelia after losing his girlfriend to an opioid overdose, who found it easier to get medication from a drug dealer than a doctor. We are raising money to help patients in waiting, grow our footprint, save lives, and earn venture-level returns for investors.
