About Bountiful

Bountiful started by Megan Nunes, a first generation immigrant from the Azores, raised in the central valley of California from a farming family. After studying agriculture at Cal Poly, Megan moved into aerospace and quickly developed a connection between the two industries. Bountiful was born out of leveraging data and analytics to help farmers modernize. Michael Bertino, an aerospace engineer by trade, joined soon after the company’s founding to build better products for agriculture.

Bountiful is a data analytics company that is creating the system of record for agriculture; specifically digitizing and organizing data in the specialty crop industry. We digitize records, benchmark against peers, forecast yield, and give market intelligence to farmers, buyers and sellers. The Bountiful Operating System (OS) product digitizes and synthesizes farm level data into a singular place for farmers and track production, costs and income year over year. This data feeds into training our yield forecasts to provide more accurate estimates at the end of the season at the field level. We have seen tremendous growth in this new product with farmers growing 3.5x last year and on track for over 3x this year. OS has opportunities for applications beyond a dashboard for farmers such as creating a data moat for ML models, due diligence for lending, insurance reporting/verification and trading.

Your Agtech responsibilities

Lead all software development for our product and internal tools. You leverage AI as a force multiplier. You use it to move faster, think bigger, and do more with less.

Some main tasks but not limited to

  • Maintain existing codebase, databases, infrastructure, CI tools
  • Drive V2 of our core OS product: fully develop automated crop pipelines for existing crops, add new crops, expand user features
  • Help manage over 130k acres of specialty crop data from Washington to California
  • You will optimize a Postgres/PostGIS database containing 9+ crop types and 200M lbs worth of records ensure sub-second dashboard latency
  • Improve suite of internal tools to track crop pipeline status including: acres, records, users actions, progress, etc.
  • Resolve high priority technical debt and security hardening
  • Delegate and coordinate with contract developers and future hires as the team grows
  • Design architecture that allows us to expand to new crop types/locations with minimal intervention
  • Document software development clean in code, readme docs, system architecture diagrams and data schemas
  • Contribute to the product roadmap and help dictate future technology and infrastructure tools
  • Report directly to Head of Product and CEO

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience software engineering, computer science or other relevant engineering disciplines. No degree necessary.
  • 5+ years of relevant software experience, particularly at a startup
  • Proven ability to ship production software end-to-end, frontend through backend through infra
  • Comfortable with Python, modern JS frameworks, cloud infrastructure (GCP preferred), and SQL at scale
  • You've used AI tools (Cursor, Claude, Copilot, etc.) as a genuine productivity multiplier
  • Experience leading and shipping complex systems before the current AI wave, demonstrating core engineering fundamentals
  • Strong communicator who can run engineering meetings, write clear documentation, translate technical tradeoffs for non-technical stakeholders
  • You’re a builder focused on action
  • Curious on how the world works in agriculture
  • Founders' mentality and understanding of what drives our business
  • Can frame the product from the point of view of users
  • Ability to learn new skills quickly
  • Experience with Scrum/Agile framework, specifically working with Jira

About Bountiful

We’re on a mission to optimize the agricultural industry. When we started Bountiful in 2015, the grape error rate for predicting production was 30 percent. Why? We found that many farmers in the specialty crops space were still using traditional pencil-and-paper techniques to predict yield. These low-fidelity forecasting methods weren’t giving them a clear enough understanding of their production until it was too late, leading to waste and inefficiency throughout the supply chain. We saw a problem we wanted to solve. Today, Bountiful is using advanced data science to help farmers forecast more accurately, so they can make better decisions. In the last three years, we’ve combined the latest in machine learning with weather, satellite, geographic, and historical data. The result is a user-friendly platform that transforms volumes of complex agricultural information into simple, actionable insights farmers can use to run more economically and environmentally sustainable farms. More recently, we’re working to open the dialogue between buyers and sellers, remove uncertainty, and provide clarity to the supply chain to meet global food demand. Our ultimate goal is to close the agricultural margin of error. Not only will this make individual farms more efficient, profitable, and sustainable, but it will help optimize the global food supply chain. That means healthier people and a healthier planet.
